Ternary paper (also known as ternary plot paper) is a type of grid paper that is used to create diagrams, charts, and graphs with a ternary coordinate system. Ternary coordinates are defined by three variables that add up to a constant, typically represented by a triangle. The grid on ternary paper is made up of three lines that form a triangle, with evenly spaced tick marks along each line representing the different values of the three variables.
Ternary paper is used in a variety of fields such as chemistry, geology, and materials science to create diagrams and charts that show the relationship between three variables. In chemistry, it's used for creating diagrams and charts that represent the composition of chemical compounds. In geology, it's used for creating diagrams and charts that represent the composition of rocks and minerals - while in materials science, it's used for creating diagrams and charts that represent the properties of materials.
The concept of ternary plots is closely associated with the work of the American chemist and mineralogist Joseph Hyde Pratt (1870–1942). Pratt is known for his contributions to the study of mineralogy and the graphical representation of mineral compositions. His book "Graphic Methods in Mineralogy," published in 1912, played a significant role in popularizing the use of ternary plots in scientific research.
