Joseph Hyde Pratt (1870–1942) was an American geologist, mineralogist, and educator, born on January 26, 1870, in Enfield, North Carolina. Graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1891, he began his career as an assistant state geologist, contributing significantly to North Carolina's geological survey.
In 1912, Pratt authored "Graphic Methods in Mineralogy," a seminal work that introduced ternary plots, revolutionizing the graphical representation of complex mineral compositions. This innovation became a standard tool in mineral composition analysis.
