Edward Haskell Moore (1862-1932) was an American mathematician who made significant contributions to the field of algebra, topology, and the history of mathematics. He was born in Cass County, Illinois and attended the University of Chicago, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
Moore began his academic career as an instructor at the University of Chicago, where he later became a professor of mathematics. He is best known for his work on algebraic topology and the theory of continuous groups, in which he introduced the concept of a "Moore space." He also made important contributions to the field of algebra, including the development of the "Moore determinant," which is a generalisation of the classical determinant.
Moore was also a historian of mathematics and wrote several influential works on the history of mathematics, including "A History of the Theory of Elliptic Functions" and "The History of the Theory of Invariants."
Moore was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and received several awards and honors for his contributions to mathematics, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1925.
Moore died in Chicago in 1932. His work had a lasting impact on mathematics, particularly in the fields of algebra and topology, and he is remembered as a prominent mathematician of his time.
